Improved security across the Coast Region has led to safer communities and a sharp rebound in tourism, the Regional Police Commander has said, citing a sustained drop in crime over the past three years.
Speaking during a regional police function, the commander said reported crime cases declined from 2,101 in 2023 to 1,254 in 2024, before dropping further to 1,092 cases in 2025.
He attributed the gains to targeted police operations that dismantled organised criminal gangs, curbed illicit brews and hard drugs, and neutralised terrorist threats, creating a secure environment for residents and visitors.
The enhanced security has translated into renewed confidence among tourists, with both local and international visitor numbers more than doubling during the period under review.
“For the first time, areas such as Old Town, Kisauni, Nyali and Likoni in Mombasa County; Tiwi and Diani in Kwale County; and Mtwapa, Majengo Kanamai, Malindi and Watamu in Kilifi County are safe for children and the elderly to walk freely without fear of attack,” the commander said.
He noted that the restoration of safety in residential areas and tourist hotspots has strengthened community life and supported economic activity, particularly in the hospitality and transport sectors.
The police chief also reported progress in addressing politically instigated ethnic and tribal clashes in Bangalale, Chardende, Bura and Madogo, where 12 illegal firearms have been recovered so far. He added that a forceful disarmament programme is planned to sustain peace in the affected areas.
In Lamu County, security operations in Kiunga, Mangai, Kizingitini, Faza Island, Pandanguo and Mpeketoni have helped curb violent activities and stabilise communities previously affected by insecurity.
He further said resource-based conflicts between farmers and pastoralists in parts of Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta counties have been addressed, although some challenges remain.
The commander said the region also experienced a peaceful festive season, with Ramadhan, Eid, Christmas and New Year celebrations taking place without major security incidents.
He attributed the improved security to strong community cooperation, inter-agency collaboration, and the commitment and resilience of police officers, calling on residents and stakeholders to continue working with security agencies to sustain peace and make the Coast Region even safer in 2026.
