Students in Mombasa have been urged to let their passions guide their career choices, as education remains the foundation for social and economic growth.

Speaking at a Career Day event organized by Nurturing Stars, Technical University of Mombasa Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, emphasized the need for learners to align their studies with their interests and talents.

“Education is the most powerful tool you can use to change your life and society,” said Prof. Abdalla, quoting Nelson Mandela. She also referenced former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, highlighting that education enables individuals to realize their full potential.

Prof. Laila noted that Kenya’s senior school system now offers three pathways under competency-based education, designed to help students identify suitable careers. She stressed that knowing one’s strengths and interests is key to success.

“Not everyone has to be a doctor or an engineer. There are opportunities in the blue economy, social sciences, community development, and teaching. The important thing is to focus on what you enjoy,” she said.

She also emphasized discipline and hard work, encouraging students preparing for exams to prioritize their goals and make the most of their time. Students were advised to take advantage of digital literacy programs and skill-building opportunities, which are increasingly important in today’s competitive job market.

“Every minute counts. Whether it’s learning a new skill or developing your creativity, you have the power to shape your future,” Prof. Abdalla concluded.
