MOMBASA, County—Mental health is emerging as a critical pillar in drug recovery efforts, with the Reachout Centre Trust placing psychosocial support at the core of its rehabilitation model.

The organization says lasting recovery goes beyond quitting substance use, requiring deliberate focus on emotional and psychological healing.

“Recovery is not just about stopping substance use—it is also about healing the mind,” says Bakari Ali, a psychosocial counsellor at the center.

Ali, who works closely with individuals seeking to rebuild their lives, notes that many who fall into substance use are often grappling with deeper, unresolved challenges.

“Some users fall into the drug trap due to economic hardship, loss of jobs or relationships, or prolonged emotional pain. Many carry these burdens silently because they don’t know where to open up,” he says.

According to Mr Ali, identifying the root cause of substance use is key to effective intervention.

“Until we understand the trigger, we cannot fully help. But when someone opens up and is ready to begin recovery, that is where the process truly starts.”

He emphasizes that treatment alone is insufficient without structured psychosocial support.

“Beyond clinical care, psychosocial support is critical in stabilizing mental wellbeing and sustaining recovery,” Ali adds.

In response, Reachout Centre Trust has strengthened its focus on mental health through advocacy, education, and community awareness, ensuring that individuals in recovery receive holistic support.

The approach allows sobriety and mental healing to progress concurrently, reducing relapse risks and supporting long-term reintegration.

The organization has also extended this focus to its staff, acknowledging the emotional demands of frontline work.

“Supporting our staff’s mental well-being is equally important. It ensures they remain resilient and able to provide quality care,” Ali says.

Both recovering individuals and staff have access to mental health and psychosocial support services, reinforcing a comprehensive care model.

Reachout Centre Trust has further credited partnerships, including support from the Kenya Red Cross Society, for strengthening its mental health interventions.

As the fight against substance abuse evolves, the organization is advocating for a shift in approach—one that recognizes mental health as central to recovery, not secondary.
