LAMU, Kenya—Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno has issued a renewed warning to criminal gangs, signaling a tougher security approach as authorities respond to rising cases of violent crime in the region.
Speaking during a public security forum in Lamu County on Wednesday, Nuno said police officers will be expected to act decisively when confronted by armed suspects, particularly those linked to machete-wielding gangs.
He cautioned that increasing criminal activity risks undermining safety and economic stability across the Coast, adding that security agencies are under pressure to restore order in affected areas.
“Our officers have a duty to protect lives and property, and they must act firmly within the law when dealing with dangerous individuals,” he said.
The commander noted that ongoing operations are targeting organised gangs blamed for a spike in robberies and violent attacks in parts of the region.
At the same time, Nuno called on parents to take greater responsibility for their children, accusing some families of enabling indiscipline and shielding offenders from accountability.
He warned that failure to address the growing involvement of youth in crime could have far-reaching social consequences.
Nuno also raised concerns about the criminal justice process, arguing that suspects released on lenient bail terms often return to communities and reoffend, further straining security efforts.
The remarks echo similar statements made by the Coast police boss in the past, which have drawn mixed reactions from the public.
While some residents support a firmer approach to curb insecurity, human rights organisations have consistently cautioned against the risk of excessive use of force and called for strict adherence to the law.
The latest statement is likely to renew debate on policing tactics in Kenya, particularly the balance between effective crime control and the protection of constitutional rights.
