KISUMU, County- The Bishop of the ACK Diocese of Maseno South, Rt. Rev. Charles Ong’injo, has criticised President William Ruto’s administration and Parliament over what he termed as failure to address the economic challenges facing Kenyans.

Speaking during the burial of Eliud Nyikal Okaka—father to Seme MP Dr James Nyikal, in Kisumu County, the bishop expressed concern over the continued rise in the cost of living, high fuel prices, and increasing pressure on households and businesses.

He faulted Members of Parliament for what he described as silence at a time when many Kenyans are struggling to make ends meet.

“Kenyans are not interested in campaign slogans. What they need now is practical solutions that will improve their lives,” he said.

Ong’injo urged leaders to shift focus from early political campaigns to service delivery, warning that citizens are growing increasingly impatient with unfulfilled promises.

“You made promises in 2022. Four years later, Kenyans are still waiting. Leadership must now translate those promises into action,” he added.

The bishop noted that economic strain has led to job losses and closure of businesses, attributing this to high operational costs and taxation.

“People are suffering. Small businesses are shutting down, and many families are under pressure. This calls for urgent and sincere intervention,” he said.

He also highlighted growing political awareness among the youth, saying many are keen on holding leaders accountable in the next general election.

“The young people are watching. They are engaging and will make decisions based on performance,” he noted.

His remarks were met with support from sections of mourners attending the burial.

Growing Clergy Voice

Ong’injo’s comments add to a growing list of clergy members who have recently spoken out on governance and the state of the economy.

Religious leaders across denominations have increasingly used public platforms to call for accountability, improved service delivery, and policies aimed at easing the burden on ordinary citizens.

The concerns come against the backdrop of continued public debate over taxation, cost of fuel, and broader economic reforms being implemented by the government.
