Journalists, digital content creators and communication professionals across the Coast region can now submit their work for recognition after the official launch of the Media and Communication Awards 2026 – Coast Edition.
The awards, an initiative of the Mombasa Press Club in partnership with Gilitics Media, aim to honour excellence in journalism, strategic communication and digital storytelling while celebrating individuals and institutions making an impact through credible information and public engagement.
Speaking during the launch, Mombasa Press Club Chairman Omar Shungu said the initiative seeks to spotlight professionals whose work continues to shape public discourse and strengthen public trust.
"We have officially launched the Media and Communication Awards 2026 – Coast Edition, and nominations are now open. We invite journalists, media houses, communication professionals, photographers, videographers, digital content creators, corporate organisations and government agencies to submit entries across the various categories," Shungu said.
Gilitics Media Founder and Director Gilbert Were said the changing communication landscape had made ethical journalism and responsible communication more important than ever.
"Technology has transformed the way we live, work and communicate. News now travels across the world within seconds, while businesses, governments and communities increasingly rely on digital platforms to engage people," he said.
"With this influence comes responsibility. Society depends on credible journalism, ethical communication, accurate information and responsible storytelling. That is why these awards matter."
Were encouraged organisations to nominate deserving professionals and celebrate excellence within their communication teams.
Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir, who presided over the launch, pledged support for the initiative and proposed introducing a special award category dedicated to stories that positively market the county.
"I propose that we have a category on selling Mombasa. We can recognise stories from tourism, logistics, photography, videography, print and digital platforms that showcase our county," he said.
He said promoting Mombasa through quality storytelling would complement the role of journalists in informing the public.
"Selling Mombasa does not mean selling an individual. We are selling our county. We need to leave Mombasa brighter and greater than we found it," Nassir said.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga urged organisations to tap into the skills of journalists beyond traditional newsroom roles.
"Journalists don't belong in newsrooms alone. They have skills that can add value in different organisations. Where opportunities exist, they should be considered," she said.
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Mombasa Chapter Chairperson Abud Jamal also pledged support for the awards, saying partnerships would help establish the event as a premier recognition platform for the Coast's media and communication sector.
