Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir has condemned the growing cases of goonism witnessed in parts of the country, urging political leaders to stop using young people to fuel violence and instead invest in programmes that improve their livelihoods.
Speaking at Tononoka Grounds during the issuance of licensing documents to 1,300 boda boda operators, the governor said Kenya's youth should be empowered through employment, business opportunities and skills development rather than being manipulated for political gain.
"Our young people do not need politicians who give them a few coins to cause chaos. They need leaders who will create opportunities, invest in their skills, support their businesses and give them a genuine stake in the future of this country," Nassir said.
The governor cited Mombasa County's partnership with the boda boda sector as an example of how governments can engage young people positively. He highlighted the integration of operators into the County Public Service, the distribution of protective gear, support for boda boda SACCOs through motorcycles and the ongoing licensing programme.
According to Nassir, issuing licensing documents to 1,300 operators demonstrates that governments can address challenges facing young people through structured support instead of criminalization or political exploitation.
He also challenged Kenyans to judge leaders based on their development record and the opportunities they create for citizens rather than divisive politics.
"Leadership must give young people hope, dignity and a pathway to improve their lives. The answer to the challenges facing our youth is not to mobilize them for violence, but to empower them to become entrepreneurs, professionals, skilled workers and responsible citizens," he said.
Nassir reaffirmed his administration's commitment to delivering on its manifesto, saying Kenya's political future should be anchored on development, accountability and service delivery instead of violence and propaganda.
