NAIROBI, Kenya—Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi has called for accountability in the implementation of agriculture and blue economy programmes in Mombasa County.
Speaking in the Senate, Abdillahi sought a statement from the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries to assess whether public investments are delivering tangible benefits to residents. She emphasized that resources allocated to the sectors must translate into measurable impact.
The Senator is demanding a detailed breakdown of county budget allocations since 2022, questioning how funds have been utilised and whether they are achieving intended outcomes.
She also called for transparency in the distribution of agricultural inputs, including seeds, fertilizers, and livestock support, alongside clear data on beneficiaries and selection criteria.
On the blue economy, Abdillahi urged the Committee to outline initiatives supporting fisherfolk and aquaculture, stressing the need for value addition, processing, and improved market access.
She pointed to increased productivity, higher fisheries output, and job creation—especially for youth—as key indicators of success.
Further, the Senator called for disclosure of implementation challenges and concrete corrective measures to ensure the programmes deliver meaningful and sustainable results.
Abdillahi maintained that strong oversight is essential in promoting accountability and driving development in Mombasa County.
